Dog Life - Introducing Your New Puppy to Your Old Dog

"So you want to get another dog, because you want another pet or you feel that the current one is getting old and is affected by illnesses like DM in dogs. But you're afraid that your current one might not like it. you can't really sit your dog down and talk to it about adding another pet to the family, so you really don't know what to do and how to deal with you old dog when the new one comes into the picture. 

 Since your doggy doesn't have the ability to speak to you about how it would feel if you get a new dog, you might just want to take it slow when introducing the puppy. Here are a few tips. 

 Know how sociable your dog is 

 By now, you should already know how sociable your doggy is. If not, then take your doggy out to a dog park or someplace where there are other dogs. Watch how it acts around them and keep a close eye on it. Does it seem happy around them and welcome them or does it snarl and growl if another dog approaches it? Knowing how sociable your doggy is will give you a preview of what is to come when a new dog is added to the family. 

 Getting to know you time 

 Once the new doggy arrives, you'd want to give your old doggy some time to get to know it. Place the puppy on the floor and let your old dog get familiar of its scent. If your dog has DM in dogs and can't move, you can just place the puppy next to it. You'll want to supervise the dogs just in case something happens between them. After a while, your old dog should get used to the new one and they'll live together happily. How long it will take will depend on the dogs. Sometimes you'll just need a few hours while others need a few days. Just be patient with them. 

 Anticipate fights 

 You will have to anticipate fights whether you like it or not. Some dogs are not very welcoming to new dogs and they might want to overpower them to show who the alpha dog is. This might break into a fight so it's important that you are around them and that they are never left alone. Dogs treat their families like packs. Once it accepts the new puppy into the pack, it'll be easier to deal with them."
